It is not uncommon for Individuals who are struggling with an addiction to alcohol and/or other drugs to simultaneously battle other types of concerns. In some cases, the additional concern may have led to the use of drugs or alcohol, while, in other cases, the substance abuse may have caused or exacerbated symptoms of the other issues. Whatever the situation may be, it is imperative that individuals who struggle with multiple issues receive comprehensive care that addresses all of their concerns.
Due to the complex nature of treatment that a person may need when working to overcome co-occurring conditions, many treatment centers offer specific programming that is tailored to address the specific types of issues that may be present. Examples of such specialty services are described in the following sections:
Eating disorder treatment
When an individual is suffering from an eating disorder, he or she may also find him or herself simultaneously battling the compulsion to use drugs and/or alcohol. Regardless of which concern presented first, it is important that treatment that is tailored to address both concerns is received.
Certain treatment centers offer programming for individuals who are suffering from anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, or other types of eating disorders and problematic eating behaviors in addition to substance abuse treatment. In these programs, evidence-based treatment modalities are implemented in addition to clinically effective therapeutic interventions so that both the symptoms of the eating disorder can be successfully treated, while also helping the individual overcome his or her compulsion to use drugs and/or alcohol.
Weight management treatment
When individuals are seeking an option for care that not only helps them overcome an addiction to drugs or alcohol, but that also helps them to begin living an overall healthy lifestyle, a program that incorporates weight management treatment may be the ideal option. Such programs can help individuals learn proper nutrition, learn how to appropriately implement exercise into their daily lives, and ultimately achieve weight loss goals.
While engaging in therapeutic interventions that allow for such changes to occur, these individuals can also participate in treatment modalities that have proven effectiveness in helping to put an end to substance abuse and addiction.
Pain management treatment
Unfortunately, individuals who battle chronic pain can find themselves in a compromised position where their access to prescription pain medications elicits an addiction to such substances. Similarly, individuals who have had surgery or suffered an injury for which prescription painkillers were prescribed may be faced with the temptation to abuse those medications. Furthermore, an addiction to prescription painkillers can also lead to polysubstance abuse, making it even more difficult for individuals to successfully put an end to their addictions.
In some cases, individuals who suffer from chronic pain may not have received medical treatment for their conditions, and subsequently turn to the abuse of alcohol or other substances in an attempt to self-medicate their distress. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding the development of the addiction, when an individual is suffering from both chemical dependency and a chronic pain condition, they require specialized treatment that addresses both concerns simultaneously. There are treatment centers that offer comprehensive care that incorporates substance abuse treatment with pain management treatment, which is an optimal option for individuals who are working to overcome their compulsion to abuse substances while also finding relief from their physical pain.
Process addiction treatment
Process addictions are concerns that plague countless individuals. Unfortunately, process addictions often go hand-in-hand with the abuse of drugs and/or alcohol. When individuals are battling both a substance use disorder and a process addiction, receiving treatment that addresses both types of concerns is imperative.
There are a number of different process addictions that individuals can suffer from, including but not limited to sex addiction, love addiction, relationship addiction, shopping addiction, and video game addiction. The treatment that individuals receive in order to overcome process addictions will be different than that which is delivered for drug or alcohol addictions. As such, in order for individuals to overcome both types of addictions, they must have access to specific therapeutic interventions that are uniquely tailored to address both types of concerns.
Substance abuse and addiction rarely occur on their own. Instead, individuals who are battling the compulsion to continuously use drugs and/or alcohol despite the onset of significant turmoil as a direct result of that use frequently find themselves confronted with co-occurring concerns that complicate the process of recovery. For this and other reasons it is important that individuals take part in a thorough assessment prior to engaging in any type of treatment so that any and all concerns and issues that they are facing can be identified and referred to when a treatment plan is created.
If you or an important person in your life is suffering from an addiction to drugs or alcohol, and is simultaneously struggling with additional concerns that could potentially hinder the recovery process, seeking out a treatment center that offers specialty services can be of immense benefit. Research the various types of services that various centers offer, and do not hesitate to contact the center with any questions that you may have.
