Drug addiction continues to plague the nation in many ways, putting a tremendous strain on communities. Not the least of the problem caused by substance abuse is a crime. A high percentage of all illegal activity can be traced back to drugs.
To illustrate this point, a recent report was released by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy that stated that the vast majority of the people arrested in major U.S. cities test positive for drugs.
The results of the report suggest that 83 percent of arrestees in Chicago, 80 percent in Sacramento, 75 percent in New York, 74 percent in Portland, Oregon, and 71 percent in Memphis test positive for at least one illegal drug.
The White House Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowske said that the numbers reinforce the fact that the nation must deal with the problem of drug abuse as a public health and public safety issue.
Furthermore, taking a more preventive approach may deliver positive results. Providing these individuals with access to addiction treatment could keep them out of jail.
