Men More Likely to Show Signs of Addiction

Men may be more likely to develop an addiction to drugs, alcohol or gambling and require substance abuse help, according to data coming from Israeli authorities. However, while women may be less likely to become addicted, their dependencies can be more severe.

The Jerusalem Post reports that the country’s Welfare and Social Affairs Ministry recently released a report showing that 80 percent of the individuals in drug rehab programs are male. However, the report also indicates that women who become addicted are more likely to become completely disabled due to their dependency.

The findings confirm similar trends in the U.S. American Men are 15 times more likely to be sent to prison for drug-related offenses, according to the Office of National Drug Control Policy. While this number cannot measure the degree to which an inmate is addicted, it does suggest that far more men are using drugs than women.

In both Israel and the U.S., alcohol addiction continues to be the single largest substance abuse problem. The Israeli researchers told the news source that the availability of the substance makes it hard to send a strong message to young people about its dangers.
