Take Action to Protect the Truth Campaign
A message from Joseph A. Califano, Jr., Chairman of the Citizens'
Commission to Protect the Truth and Former U.S. Secretary of Health,
Education and Welfare
One of the most successful media campaigns ever designed to combat
youth smoking is in danger of extinction. The American Legacy Foundation's
truth® campaign educates our nation's youth about the dangers
of smoking and teaches them awareness of the tobacco industry's
marketing tactics that single them out as targets -- or as one tobacco
company executive referred to them -- "replacement smokers."
Tobacco companies make a product that kills 1,200 Americans a day;
they need young "replacement smokers" to stay in business.
Everyday 2,000 teenagers start smoking and more than 80 percent
of all adult smokers start smoking before they turn 18. truth®
has helped reduce these numbers. We need your help to keep the campaign
alive.
The Citizens' Commission to Protect the Truth was formed for this
purpose. On this Commission I am joined by every former U.S. Secretary
of Health and Human Services and Health, Education and Welfare,
U.S Surgeon General and Director of the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention. Our goal is simple -- to collect one million signatures
from concerned Americans supporting the continuation of the truth®
campaign.
I urge you to join the Citizens' Commission to Protect the Truth
by logging on to www.ProtectTheTruth.org and signing our petition.
In doing so, you will help us protect the truth®.
