Indiana Court Allows Bar to Sue Underage Drinkers
The Indiana Court of Appeals ruled that a South Bend bar could sue
underage drinkers, holding them responsible for actions that put
the establishment at risk of losing its liquor license, the Associated
Press reported June 17.
The ruling was made in a lawsuit filed by The Boat Club bar, owned
by Millennium Club Inc. Last year, the bar sued 200 students from
the University of Notre Dame and St. Mary's College for underage
drinking.
Although public places are required to enforce underage-drinking
laws, the appeals court said, "We also recognize the competing
public policy that the minors should be held accountable for their
actions."
The lawsuit seeks $3,000 in damages from each student.
