U.S. Congress Addresses Smoking in Films
The U.S. House of Representatives Commerce Committee and the U.S.
Senate Commerce Committee are conducting separate hearings that
focus on the entertainment industry's portrayal of smoking in movies,
the Hollywood Reporter reported May 10.
The entertainment industry has been under fire for increasing depictions
of smoking in television and films.
Jack Valenti, head of the Motion Picture Association, LeVar Burton,
co-chair of the Directors Guild of America's social-responsibility
task force, Madeline Dalton, associate professor of pediatrics at
Dartmouth Medical School, and Stanford Glantz, professor of medicine
at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine,
are scheduled to testify at the hearings.
The movie industry argues that filmmakers have the right to decide
whether characters should smoke.
