Bush Renews Push for Faith-Based Initiatives
President Bush is once again pushing his faith-based funding agenda,
which has stalled in the U.S. Congress since he unveiled it during
the early days of his administration, Fox News reported June 1.
The initiative would allow religious groups to compete for government
money. Opponents of the measure are concerned about government paying
for religious-based programs.
To sidestep the stalled legislative process, the president has
issued executive orders and regulations to enable religious organizations
to compete for federal contracts as long as their services are available
to anyone.
In particular, the White House is targeting religious-based groups
that serve at-risk youth, ex-offenders, the homeless, the hungry,
addicted individuals, welfare-to-work families and those with HIV
or AIDS.
The White House calls the president's faith-based initiative "a
fresh start and bold new approach to government's role in helping
those in need."
